Harness the power of sunshine! Linoleum is a very hard material to carve, but can be softened with heat. When I'm carving very large pieces, the most convenient heat source is the sun. Park your set up in the sunshine, and enjoy the free, even, source of energy, and save yourself some backache!

... and exciting, as I am an illustrator too ( working and living in vienna/austria) and most of my jobs are done in lino, and using this technique I am a bit of an outsider here( might be changing these days, though ) - so it´s good to see you thrive!
well yes, and here´s what I do before carving ( if it isn´t winter and there is a heater nearby where I can let the lino warm up a little) :
I sit on it for a while ( using the moments to focus on the carving ahead), and as soon as it doesn´t feel cold to the bum any more I know:
ready to carve!

Great idea! I've been carving with MDF but LOVE the smell of linoleum, so I bought a ton of Golden Cut from Dick Blick but I'm having quite a difficult learning curve. I have a Blick press and can't figure out the blankets and gears. If I tighten the press TOO much, the image doesn't print. If I tighten too much, the image AND negative space prints. If I loosen it up, then the ink doesn't get pressed hard enough to print. Arg. Frustrating!
Anyway... I intend to check back often. Love your blog and can't wait to hear the tips! :)

Your linos are just beautiful. You really know how to handle the medium. For myself, I go lame and use Easy-Kut and stay very small. I have to hand-rub all my linos.
