This is what is say's on Mosaika's blog:

Mosaika is working on a new project with public artist Sonia Romero for the Westlake McArthur Park Station subway station in LA. A departure from traditional mosaics, these 13 ceramic medallions and frames are hand carved, then cut into in irregular fitted sections, then fired, glazed, re-fired and re-assembled to achieve this original and highly customized look. This process was developed in order to translate Sonia Romero’s lino-cut artworks into a durable medium suitable for the LACMTA.
